For many, many years, I didn’t share my art. I showed it to family and friends, but I never went further than that. It was only recently that I decided to create both an Instagram page and a website. You might be wondering why I suddenly started publishing my art for the world to see.
Get Feedback and Inspiration
There is a huge art community on Instagram. When I post my art there, I can get feedback from other artists, which helps me improve. My friends and family are also able to share their opinions with me. They often message me privately to tell me that they really like a specific piece I posted. This helps me see what content people like best!
Reach out to People
Recently, I created this piece in Prismacolor coloured pencils.
When I posted this on Instagram, the model in the reference image, as well as the photographer, reached out and commented on my post! This would never have been possible without me first sharing my work. It’s so rewarding to have experiences like this, where you can help brighten someone else’s day with your art.
New Opportunities
I learned a lot of helpful things about art through posting to Instagram and my website. Instagram showed me the Inktober challenge, which ended up being one of my favourite art experiences. As well, there are a large variety of opportunities available online. I’ve learned about features on others’ art pages, which have helped grow my audience tremendously. Aside from that, you can enter contests and giveaways, find new artists to follow, and access helpful content like tutorials.
Motivation
It’s so encouraging to see people interact with my social media, blog posts, and online store. There’s no feeling like getting the “New Purchase” notification on my phone! The tangible evidence that people are seeing and enjoying my work motivates me to create more.
Track progress
Whether I post my art on Instagram or on my website, I have a consistent record of my
favourite pieces that I’ve created. In the future I can look back on these and see my growth and improvement.
Have a Portfolio
My Instagram feed and website act as a virtual portfolio to share my art with potential buyers. Anyone who’s interested in my art can visit my website and look through it at their leisure. My online shop is a collection of all my favourite pieces, making it the perfect place to direct anyone who wants to see my work.
If you have a hobby, I highly recommend taking it to social media or any other online platform. It'll really help take your hobby to the next level and motivate you to continue creating!
