Happy (very late) New Year!!
Have you written out your New Year’s Resolutions? Have you made a vision board? Are you the type to forget about your goals mid-February?
Whether you are or not, you’ve probably given some thought to what you want to accomplish this year. And so I have I! Since this IS supposed to be an art blog, I’ll be sharing some of my art-related goals for 2022.
Don’t Buy New Supplies
I tend to buy a lot of brand new art supplies before finishing my old ones. This can become a problem. For instance, I used to really like the 8”x6” Canson sketchbooks, so I bought four or five from Michaels. However, I now want to try a bigger one, but can’t waste the ones I already have. (If you have any suggestions for bigger sketchbooks, comment below!!) This year I want to try and be more sustainable and thoughtful about the supplies I buy.
Improve on Drawing Male Body Types
If you’ve read my other posts you already know how much I struggle with this!! This year I need to do more observational work with male body types and refine my techniques of drawing them. This will mostly be work in my sketchbook that I could potentially translate into standalone pieces.
Do More Life Drawing
Life drawing is the practice of drawing people from life, not from photos. It’s such an important part of art. Not only is it fun, it helps you improve all aspects of your artwork, from observation to proportions. I’m very interested in it but have never been able to do it properly. This year I want to do it more. I’ve thought about taking a life drawing class, but ultimately it would be a lot easier to do it on my own time. Maybe my friends from school will let me draw them?
Draw Something Other Than People
You might not be able to tell from my Instagram page, but I draw a LOT of people, especially portraits. While it’s fine to have a preference, it’s never good to keep drawing the same thing over and over again. I plan to try working on drawing animals, plants, buildings, and more.
Make Bigger Pieces
So many people have complained that my work is too small. Personally I don’t see an issue with that, but I think I could give bigger pieces a try. That could help me sell more work. Also, a lot of people who have bought pet portraits have chosen the biggest size I offer. This makes me think it would be smart to include an even bigger size.
Post Drawings on Instagram More Often
My Instagram page is getting SO empty and dry. This year, I plan to start posting art more often. This means I might not be able to post only finished drawings and might have to throw in a few sketchbook things, but at least I’ll keep the page active. This includes writing more blog posts! I was thinking about making an actual post every Sunday featuring some art from the blog instead of just a story to try and get my analytics up, because they're dropping.
Try Drawing Backgrounds
Backgrounds are not fun to draw. Maybe you like them, but I think they’re a drag. All the same, I’m getting tired of doing the same old “solid-pastel-coloured-square” behind every single drawing. Practice is the key to developing any art skill, so it looks like I’ll be drawing a lot of backgrounds this year.
And there you have it- my art goals for 2022. If I remember (lol) I’ll try to make a post in December addressing whether or not I reached them and how I went about doing it. What are your art goals? Are any of them the same as mine? Comment down below and let me know!!
