My New Favourite Artists

One of the first blog posts I ever did was called “My Favourite Artists” where I talked about, you guessed it, my favourite artists. But since then, I’ve changed and evolved as an artist. Naturally, so has my inspiration. Since that last post two years ago, I’ve discovered so many new and incredible artists whose work I admire so much. In this blog post, I’ll talk about 3 new artists I’ve recently discovered and loved.

The first artist I discovered was Sari Shryack. I found her through the Instagram explore page, where she goes by @not_sorry_art. She mainly does large scale acrylic paintings of various subjects, from still lifes of fruit to disco balls to unconventional portraits. I admire her work with colour a lot. She does these really vibrant underpaintings in neon orange or pink, and the colours peek through the final painting. Her style kind of reminds me of Van Gogh (read a blog about him here), with the way she does brushstrokes.

But my favourite thing about Sari’s art is the way she tells a story with her paintings and shows the mundane aspects of life in a new light. Take this painting, which she captioned “Who knew the post dinner cleanup could be so beautiful.”

She takes an average scene, a kitchen with fruit on the counter, and portrays it with vibrancy and vitality. It makes a mundane image into something beautiful to look at and experience. Seeing her art makes you appreciate the little things in life a lot more!

Or take a look at this one: an acrylic painting of a regular house in the evening. What sounds like a boring scene looks almost alien, flooded with vibrant blues and oranges. It reminds me of an illustration in a children’s book.

I also discovered Camila Salinas, an eighteen year old artist on Instagram (@camilaas.art). She makes art revolving mostly around self-portraits, a concept I find really interesting. Usually I find a hyper-realistic style boring, but hers is anything but. She uses surrealism to make the art interesting to look at and analyse. This is one of my favourite paintings by her, of her braiding her own hair.

I feel like you could infer a deep meaning about self-love here, or just enjoy the art for the way it looks. The colours and the perspective are so masterfully done, it’s amazing!

I also really like this one, a drawing of her and her younger self making art together. This one really speaks to me. I can picture this piece as me making art with my younger self! The way she used crayons ties into the theme and makes the overall piece more visually interesting.

Last is Eyvind Earle, a famous artist who I did a project on for Visual Art last semester. I actually discovered him a while ago, but didn’t fully appreciate his work until I did that project. I already knew about his paintings, but when I did further research, I discovered his serigraphs. I still don’t really get what a serigraph is, but from what I can understand, it’s a stencil based art form where paint is put through a screen to make the patterns on the page. Autumn Leaves is my favourite of his serigraphs.

It’s such a unique piece of art and so different from what he’s famous for. The black and white designs contrast really well with the bright colours and tie the whole piece together. I would really love to try this art form one day and see how it turns out!

So there you have it: three of my new favourite artists. I hope you love their work as much as I do! Maybe you discovered one of your new favourite artists through this post. Let me know in the comments below!
