I’ve talked before about the importance of goal setting in your artistic practice. In this post, you can learn about the different objectives I’ve set for myself! If you’re having trouble setting your own, I’ve also discussed the best way to make and achieve your artistic goals .
How Can I Set Artistic Goals?
Step 1: Think about what you want to change
Before you can try to reach your goals, you have to make them. It can be hard to decide on a concrete goal to work towards. I recommend looking at the art you are currently making and thinking about what you want to change. Do you want to change your style? Your medium? A new form of artwork entirely?
Step 2: How do you make that change? Consider: What am I working towards?
Once you’ve considered the changes you want to make, you can turn your ideas into specific goals. For example, if you want to move on from sketching and try your hand at pottery, your goal could be to sculpt, paint, and glaze a nice bowl to give as a gift.
Step 3: Make a plan. Consider: What do I have to do to achieve my end result?
Goals are useless without a plan to accomplish them! Make sure to create a plan with goals and steps along the way. Let's use our previous example of developing your pottery skills. To make your finished project, you'll need supplies and plenty of practice! Therefore, your plan could be to sign up for a pottery class at your local community centre, buy your own supplies, make 5 bowls as practice, and then work on creating your finished piece. You may have to make some modifications along the way, but try to stick to your original plan and see it all the way through.
Step 4: Create Habits
Good habits are the best way to see your plan through. It’s important to develop good habits that will benefit your goal in the long run. For example, make a habit of going to each and every weekly pottery class. Don't skip a day! After a while, this will become such an ingrained part of your routine that you won't have to push yourself to work on your skills each week.
What Are My Artistic Goals?
Try a new medium (pottery, sculpture, etc.)
I’d like to try something other than 2D art for a change! I haven’t fully decided which one I want to do, but I’m leaning towards pottery.
Try oil painting
I’m not sure if I’m ready to try oil painting because of the amount of supplies you need, but I’m interested!
Scale up: make larger pieces
I tend to make very small pieces. Making larger paintings and drawings is something I’ve been interested in doing for quite a while.
Expand commissions: start commissioning different types of pieces
I recently opened commissions for pet portraits in acrylic paint. If these portraits do well enough, I’d like to commission other material in the future.
Revisit my old cartoons and comics
You can check out this post to see some of my old cartoons and comics. This is something I would love to revisit, since comics are such a fun thing to draw!
