Buying art for your home can be intimidating. You want something that reflects your personality, goes well with other decor, and looks nice in your space! If you struggle to pick the right artwork for your home, I’ve provided a few helpful tips and resources to help you out.
Consider your colour scheme. Most rooms will have a colour scheme and a specific look to them. For example, you might have a modern living room with different shades of gray on your walls and furniture. Abstract art is well suited for a modern room, and if your colour scheme is neutral, look for a pop of colour like a bright yellow or pink. If your room has a rustic aesthetic, you could go for a wood burning piece.

Pick something that reflects your personality. Think of subject matter you enjoy. Odds are, you can find a painting that includes it. For instance, someone who likes animals could choose a canvas print of some wildlife photography.

Use more than one piece. If picking the right art stresses you out, pick more than one! If you go with this approach, you’ll likely need smaller pieces. A good rule to stick with is “the more pieces you have, the less important each one is.” Make sure they’re cohesive and placed in similar frames. Try a thin black frame or another neutral colour.

Pick a quote. Wall art doesn’t have to be a painting or photography. You can invest in a cheaper, poster-like hanging with a fun quote on it. Make sure it means something to you!

Make something yourself. If you’ve always wanted to get into art or photography, now is the time! Try your hand at painting, sketching, or something else, and hang your product on your wall. Not only is this meaningful, it’ll serve as motivation to work hard and improve your craft.

Consider wall space. Before you purchase that painting you’ve been eyeing, decide where you’re going to put it. Avoid putting a small piece alone on an empty wall or overwhelming a smaller wall with a large, ornate frame. Again, if you have a large wall, a gallery wall is a great option!

Go for emotion. What emotion do you want the piece to evoke? If you’d like to hang it in your bedroom, you might want a serene, calming piece like a lake view or a simple line drawing. Once you’ve decided this, it’ll be much easier to choose and narrow down your options.

Contact the artist. If you’re having doubts about a specific piece, where to hang it, or how to frame it, chances are the artist will be happy to help. They can provide recommendations or other resources for you to use.

Be unique! This doesn’t only refer to the type of art you buy, but where you buy it from. Instead of shopping at a retail store, consider buying directly from the artist. That way, not only do you have an original, one of a kind piece, you’re also supporting a small business.
